Program Philosophy: Presence, Place, and Purpose
In an increasingly digital world, many students spend a significant portion of their day interacting with screens rather than engaging directly with their physical environment. While technology has value as a tool, overreliance on digital platforms can limit opportunities for sensory learning, real-world problem-solving, and meaningful human connection.
Rooted Learning intentionally creates a low-tech, hands-on educational environment where students are encouraged to disengage from digital distractions and fully engage with the natural world, their peers, and tangible work.
Equally important, the program responds to a growing societal shift in which fewer individuals are learning essential life skills such as growing and preserving food, caring for land, repairing clothing and tools, building shelters, and sourcing food from the natural environment.
Rooted Learning emphasizes the development of self-reliance, practical competence, and resourcefulness. Students gain confidence in their ability to meet basic needs, solve real-world problems, and contribute meaningfully to their households and communities.
This approach is not about isolation, but about empowerment—equipping students with the knowledge and skills to engage more thoughtfully and capably with the world around them.
Program Overview
Rooted Learning is a 10-month, farm-based education program designed for students ages 7-12 operating on a traditional academic-year schedule (September through June, with summers off).
The program blends environmental science, agriculture, craftsmanship, entrepreneurship, and the arts into a cohesive, interdisciplinary curriculum.
Students engage in real-world learning through farming, food preparation, ecological study, and creative projects, fostering both academic growth and practical life skills.
